KUCHING, Oct 20: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) chief whip cum Deputy Prime Minister Dato Sri Fadillah Yusof’s suggestion to allow its candidate to retain the Jepak seat unopposed in the forthcoming by-election is a sensible decision that saves valuable resources that can be directed towards addressing pressing needs and priorities in Sarawak.

Fully supporting this call, Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) deputy information chief Andy Lawrence said Fadillah’s suggestion takes into account the timing and scale of the election.

“Considering the prospect of a contest, Fadillah highlights the practicality of allowing GPS to win the seat unopposed, saving money and energy.

“This approach minimises not only unnecessary expenses but also preserves valuable resources for addressing pressing issues and priorities in Sarawak,” he said in a statement today.

He was commenting on Fadillah’s remarks made yesterday (Oct 19) in expressing confidence that GPS can secure the Jepak seat even if there was to be a contest. He thus suggested that aspiring candidates should drop the idea of contesting in the Jepak by-election to save their money and energy for a much bigger election.

Andy emphasised that Fadillah’s confidence in GPS’ ability to win convincingly in Jepak is a testament to the strong foundation and support the coalition has built in Sarawak.

“By focusing our collective efforts on a much larger election in the future, we can ensure the optimum utilisation of resources and maximise the impact of our campaigns,” he said.

Adding to the confidence expressed by GPS chairman and Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg in the selection of former National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) Sarawak director Iskandar Turkee as the coalition’s candidate, Andy said it is evident that GPS has made a careful and strategic choice to ensure success in the Jepak by-election.

He thus encouraged other hopefuls to consider this pragmatic approach and recognise GPS’s strength and support in the Jepak constituency.

“By allowing GPS to retain the seat unopposed, we can foster stability, unity, and continuity in representing the people’s interests.

“I firmly believe that supporting GPS’s suggestion to win the Jepak by-election unopposed is a sensible decision that saves valuable resources and emphasises the coalition’s strength and competence. It allows us to focus on the greater electoral challenges ahead and work towards the continued progress and prosperity of Sarawak and its people,” he added. — DayakDaily
