SIBU, July 17: A proposal has been put forth to turn the area around Kutien Memorial Garden into a leisure park.

Speaking at a mass cleaning campaign at the park today, Bukit Assek assemblyman, Joseph Chieng said such transformation would befit the place.

“In this area, we have the memorial garden, Bukit Lima indoor stadium, open air basketball and volleyball courts, and swimming pool. We can create more facilities so that we can transform the place into a big leisure park,” he said.

According to him, there is still ample land around the park which could be cleared to add in more facilities that could attract more visitors.

“We as the ‘wakil rakyat’ will back up Sibu Municipal Council to transform the place so more people will be attracted to come here for leisure activity,” he said.

Chieng also urged parents to bring their children to the park.

“We should bring our children and grandchildren to the garden to participate in any event such as this cleaning campaign as currently only members of Sarawak Kutien Association are doing it,” he said.

The annual campaign, he said, was temporarily stopped for the previous two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The association had in 2003 adopted Bukit Lima Garden and turned it into Kutien Memorial Garden.

This picturesque garden not only provides a venue for leisure and recreational activities for locals, but the association’s history and historical milestones are engraved in a special monument in the garden to inform the public of the association’s origin. — DayakDaily
