KUCHING, Oct 27: The Prime Minister’s Department (PMD) has denied issuing a document to enforce a smartphone ban on those below the age of 16.

In a brief statement, it said the document titled ‘Perintah Larangan Penggunaan Telefon Pintar Bagi Individu Di Bawah Umur 16 Tahun’ (Order Prohibiting the Use of Smartphones for Individuals Under the Age of 16)—which is reportedly circulating on WhatsApp—is false and advised the public against forwarding it.

“For public awareness, the department has never issued any statement related to this matter. The public is advised to always act ethically and responsibly, and to verify the authenticity of any information before sharing it with others to avoid confusion,” said the statement.

It also reminded that the spread of false news or misinformation is an offence under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. — DayakDaily
