KUCHING, April 9: Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication (Utility) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi wants the Muslim community to make the serving of ‘bubur pedas’ or spiced porridge during the holy month of Ramadan a continuing tradition and proud heritage.

He said it is important for the younger generation to keep the practice going.

“This had been practised by our parents and grandparents for many years. We must follow what they did.

“It must become our tradition and proud heritage, and the spirit of helping each other in the community or the ‘gotong-royong’ should also continue,” he said.

Dr Abdul Rahman, who is the Pantai Damai state assemblyman, said this before officiating at the making and distributing of the porridge during ‘Program Agihan Bubur Pedas Kejiranan Mesra (KJM) DBKU’ at Masjid Darul Akmal, Taman Samariang Aman today.

The objective of the programme organised by Kuching City North Hall (DBKU) and its Development Community unit, DBKU Friendly Neighbourhood (KJM), was to establish good relations with the community, create communication and foster a caring and dynamic society.

Dr Abdul Rahman lauded DBKU and KJM for doing community-based work for the many residents under the council’s jurisdiction.

“KJM existed since 2001, and 50 residential areas under DBKU’s jurisdiction had joined their community work not only during festival time but also in educational activities, cooking classes, and small business activities.

“It is very encouraging as it spurs the community to work together to achieve a common goal, and we hope DBKU and KJM will continue to help the community to improve their economic and social well-being,” he said.

Also present at the event was DBKU Mayor Datu Junaidi Reduan. — DayakDaily
