KUCHING, July 8: With the high-income status accorded by World Bank, Sarawak’s wealth will be distributed to improve household income, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Abang Johari explained that although it is quite an achievement for Sarawak to achieve that status, it is based on the GNI (gross national income) per capita and not household income per capita.
According to him, there is a difference as GNI is an economic statistical indicator—indicating that Sarawak’s (economic) performance is on the right track.
“Therefore, with this extra income, we have to redistribute the wealth to the people. Otherwise, there will be disparity where the country has substantial income, but the the household income is still small,” he said during 15th Gawai Carnival Redeems 2023 in Bau tonight.
He pointed out that the income will be distributed through financial instruments under the Post-Covid Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
He said that is why the Sarawak government, under Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), is developing digital connectivity infrastructure and road infrastructure, which includes the coastal road and Pan Borneo Highway, with assistance from the federal government.
“Firstly, we have to improve our water and power supply which is basic infrastructure, and second, human resources, which we call talent development, for us to get value added to the resources that we have and the infrastructure that we have developed.
“Of course, thirdly is through technology. For instance, precision farming utilising technology to improve productivity.
“Meaning that the income will increase, which leads to higher income per household,” he added. — DayakDaily
