MIRI, July 9: A massive fire destroyed 27 ‘pintu’ (household units of a longhouse) of an 85-door Kayan-Kenyah longhouse at Kampung Long Wat in Apoh, Baram, early this morning.
According to a report from the Miri Fire and Rescue Department, villagers managed to put out the fire at 2.30am.
A team of Marudi firefighters was deployed to the scene upon being informed of the incident by the longhouse’s chief at 5.19am.
The caller went to Long Bedian to make the phone call as there was no cellular network in Long Wat.
“The team had been mobilised to the scene onboard a ferry from Marudi to reach the scene at 6am today,” said the report.
No casualties were reported in the incident.
