KUCHING, July 30: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has welcomed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s proposal to explore the establishment of an energy link between Sarawak and Singapore, which could pave the way for clean energy exports to the island republic.

In a TVS and Ukas news report, Abang Johari said the proposal aligns with Sarawak’s long-term ambition to become a regional leader in green energy and could strengthen the State’s role as a key player in the renewable energy ecosystem within Asean.

“The proposal is currently under consideration by top-level leadership, particularly in terms of enhancing regional cooperation in sustainable energy.

“I hope a decision will be made to establish an energy connection between Sarawak and Singapore. This is a great opportunity for us to expand the green energy export market from Sarawak,” he told reporters after a joint press conference with the Anwar at the Asean Secretariat Building in Jakarta, Indonesia on Tuesday (July 29).

Abang Johari also pointed out that the recently concluded 13th Malaysia-Indonesia Annual Consultations between Anwar and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at Istana Merdeka had positive implications for development in both Sarawak and West Kalimantan — particularly in the energy sector.

He noted that Sarawak’s ongoing investments in Kalimantan are part of its broader strategy to advance new energy development and further consolidate its position as a sustainable energy hub in the region.

“The second focus is the development of new energy through our investments in Kalimantan, an initiative that will strengthen Sarawak’s position in the sustainable energy sector,” he said.

Earlier, Abang Johari joined Anwar during his working visit to the Merdeka Palace for a bilateral meeting with Prabowo. The visit also included a stop at the Asean Secretariat, where Anwar delivered a keynote address in conjunction with Malaysia’s Asean Chairmanship in 2025.

The Malaysian delegation also included Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor and Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. The Sarawak delegation comprised Sarawak Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki and Deputy Minister of Utility and Telecommunications Dato Ibrahim Baki, representing Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) and Sarawak Energy Berhad. — DayakDaily
