KUCHING, Sept 21: Fuya Energy Sdn Bhd, in partnership with i-CATS University College, is being urged to explore replacing lithium-ion components in batteries with zinc-ion technology to produce environmentally-friendly batteries from Sarawak not only for the domestic market but also for global consumption.
Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has given this challenge to Fuya Energy and i-CATS to innovate in their battery production process.
While batteries remain a critical component for powering vehicles, whether they run on fossil fuels, electricity, or hydrogen fuel cells, he however, emphasised that in the pursuit of sustainability and the global shift toward renewable and green energy sources, it is crucial that these batteries are eco-friendly.
Sarawak’s public transportation sector is also undergoing a transition, shifting from fossil fuels to electric and hydrogen power for vehicle fleets.
“Based on my study, the only problem with batteries is the lithium component which is difficult to be disposed off at the end of its five to 10 years lifecycle.
“However, with advancements in technology and scientific research, lithium-ion components can be substitute with zinc-ion alternatives, which is low carbon and thus making it a more environmental friendly solution,” he said when officiating at the opening of Fuya Energy Sdn Bhd in Demak Laut Industrial Park today.
He highlighted that, given Sarawak’s energy generation primarily from renewable and green sources (70% from hydropower mixed with gas turbines and minor coal plants), the entire production and supply chain, along with the materials and products produced in Sarawak, are environmentally friendly.
“These batteries produced by Fuya is using renewable energy in the process and the end product is of low carbon.
“Furthermore, Fuya is also using robotic, automation and technology in their operation to produce the batteries, enhancing efficiency. I must congratulate Fuya for adopting a new and green approach in their processes,” he commended.
Abang Johari emphasised that adopting such green practices would facilitate securing bank loans based on ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) protocols, providing a competitive advantage for expansion and market dominance.
“Once this can be done, the market it yours,” he added.
Fuya Energy director Dato Alan Tay Tze Poh expressed confidence in their ability to meet the diverse needs of customers from various markets while promoting Malaysian products worldwide.
“With our advanced technology and machinery, we are confident in achieving reliable products while our R&D (research and development) team strive for continuous improvement.
“Responsibilities to our environment is now also a must for every industry. At Fuya, recycling is part of the process. We also invest in ensuring an effective environmental control in all our processess,” he assured.
The company’s partner from China’s Jujiang Power Technology Co., Jiang Ren Hai, emphasised their vision to establish Fuya Energy as Southeast Asia’s premier battery manufacturing company, known for producing high-quality, efficient, cost-effective batteries that deliver strong returns for shareholders.
