KUCHING, May 27: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg will raise the matter of Universiti Malaysia Sabah’s (UMS) water supply issues to the Minister of Higher Education Malaysia, Dato’ Seri Diraja Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir.
According to a statement issued by the Office of the Premier of Sarawak, the Premier said this in response to a viral open letter by UMS student, Muhammad Rasul Rozmiezan, who is a Sarawakian, on the issue.
“The Premier has taken note of the open letter from a student from Universiti Malaysia Sabah on the water issues faced by the students there.
“The Premier expressed his gratitude for the information conveyed, but explained that he could not take the desired action as the matter is outside his jurisdiction.
“However, he will raise the issue for the information and action of Minister of Higher Education Malaysia, Dato’ Seri Diraja Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir,” said the statement.
Muhammad Rasul, a second-year sociology student from Kuching, said he wrote the letter to voice the concerns of Sarawakian students and push the issue to national attention.
In the letter dated May 19, Muhammad Rasul said students have gone without consistent water for days, which interrupted with the students’ daily lives.
“I respectfully and humbly request that YAB Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri can consider giving his attention to our problems and to help carry the voices of Sarawakian students here to the relevant parties at the national level,” he said in the letter. — DayakDaily
