KUCHING, Aug 8: Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg will lead a Sarawak delegation to Norway soon to study the infrastructure and technology used in carbon storage.
Speaking to reporters today, he said Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) had been issued the licence to serve as a resource manager for Sarawak’s natural carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) resources, particularly in commercialising the development of stranded sour gas reserves offshore Sarawak.
“Petros and I will go to Norway to look at the infrastructure on how we can store carbon and the technology used,” he said after attending the Sarawak Skills and i-Cats University College’s 25th Convocation Ceremony held at Borneo Convention Centre (BCCK) here.
In January last year, the Norwegian Ambassador in Malaysia, Morten Paulsen, expressed the Norwegian government’s interest in implementing CCUS in Sarawak.
Additionally, Abang Johari mentioned that a subsidiary company of Samling Timber Malaysia — SaraCarbon Sdn Bhd — has also been given a carbon licence to study the potential of undertaking a carbon-nature-based project in Marudi within Samling’s industrial tree plantation area.
“They (SaraCarbon) are currently looking at the details together with their strategic partner from Singapore,” he said.
To date, both companies were the only carbon licence holders, Abang Johari noted. — DayakDaily
