KUCHING, Aug 30: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is set to officially launch the ‘Croc Watch’ app, a specialised application designed for crocodile detection, at the closing ceremony of the Belawai Festival in Belawai on Sept 29.

According to a TVS news report, Sarawak Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration, and Environment, Datuk Len Talif Salleh, stated that the government developed the app in collaboration with the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) and Sarawak Information Systems (Sains).

“The idea for this app came to me two years ago while attending an International Information Technology (IT) Conference in Santiago,” he shared with the media yesterday (Aug 29).

He further explained that the app is not only user-friendly but also allows the public to directly share information with the SFC regarding crocodile sightings in their respective areas.

SFC, in turn, will update the app with this information, enabling the public to identify key crocodile hotspots or areas where reptile attacks are frequently reported.

Earlier, during the Belawai Beach Festival Organising Committee meeting yesterday, Len Talif mentioned that the festival, which will run from Sept 20 to Sept 29, will feature a variety of exciting events.

“We have also prepared over 160 sales booths for small traders to generate income throughout the festival,” he added. — DayakDaily
