KUCHING, May 25: Sarawak is confident that it can cut hydrogen production energy cost to 10 kilowatt hours per kilogramme (kWh/kg) from the current 30 kWh/kg, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Speaking at the ASEAN Women Economic Summit (AWES) 2025 panel session on ‘Leading ASEAN Sustainability and Digitalisation’ held in Kuala Lumpur today, he said that this is possible through the State government’s ongoing partnership with the German company, Siemens.

“We produce hydrogen in Sarawak with an electricity consumption of about 60 kWh/kg, but we worked with the PETRONAS research division and a Japanese company, and it seems that we have improved the technology through the new membrane technology.

“Now, energy consumption for hydrogen production has been reduced from 60 kWh/kg to 30, which means a reduction in cost.

“However, there is a possibility (in collaborating with Siemens) that the cost of producing hydrogen will be further reduced to maybe 10 kWh/kg,” he said.

He added that by doing so, Sarawak can comply with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards and will be part of Malaysia’s efforts to work towards a clean environment.
