KUCHING, May 12: Sarawak is aiming to be the first legacy capital for business events in Malaysia and Borneo, says the Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said it has been foreseen that business events would become a strong contributor to Sarawak’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and social development.

“We will develop a legacy ecosystem by enhancing our human capital and using data to respond to market needs.

“We will continue to communicate and connect with key stakeholders and cement Sarawak’s legacy brand promise,” he said.

As a testament to this leadership role, Abang Johari revealed that the Legacy Impact Master Action Plan would be launched by Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak) and the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts at IMEX Frankfurt trade show on May 23 in Germany.

The Legacy Impact Master Action Plan is the first action plan of its kind in Southeast Asia to define and drive decisions about hosting business events in Sarawak.

“This is Sarawak adopting transformative thinking — first-tier thinking. Legacy impact is Sarawak’s value proposition beyond business events, but the proposition for all sectors and industries.

“It is imperative that government ministries and agencies act upon this directive to empower Sarawak as the first legacy capital in Malaysia and Borneo,” he said when officiating at the 10th Anak Sarawak Award giving ceremony held at a local hotel tonight.

In contribution to being the legacy capital for business events in the region, Abang Johari also said that Sarawak will target and prioritise business event topics that fall within the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030’s six key economic sectors including manufacturing, mining, agriculture, forestry, tourism and services, as well as the seven enabling sectors namely digital, innovation, education, infrastructure, utilities, transport and renewable energy.

He said Sarawak looked at legacy impact before most business event players in the world, and that incredible talent to create a better Sarawak should be recognised.

Among those also present at the ceremony were Deputy Premier Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian, Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, and BESarawak chief executive officer Amelia Roziman. — DayakDaily
