Premier: Special education assistance to benefit 5,000 Sarawakian students annually

KUCHING, Nov 9: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has announced special assistance for Sarawakian students, aiming to benefit around 5,000 students annually in both public and private higher learning institutions (IPTA/IPTS).

This assistance is particularly targeted at students from B40 families.

“In our efforts to provide free tertiary education, we also take into account of what other assistance that we can provide for the Sarawakian students in IPTA and IPTS.

“We know there are many things that they need, and it is costly. As such, I have asked my cabinet minister to consider and look for a way to help our students,” he told reporters when met after officiating at the Financial Literacy Exhibition by Bank Negara Malaysia at Borneo Culture Museum, here today.

He said apart from that, the special assistance will also include assistance for students’ textbooks.

“There are other aids that I will announce when tabling Sarawak Budget 2024 in the coming Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting this coming Nov 20,” he said.

Meanwhile, Oct 1, Abang Johari said Sarawak may be able to fulfill its wish to provide free tertiary education to Sarawakian studying in any five State-owned institutions by 2026. — DayakDaily
