KUCHING, Dec 3: Sarawak’s strengths in renewable energy, digital transformation, and sustainable agriculture are poised to reinforce Malaysia’s leadership in Asean as the nation prepares to assume the regional chairmanship in 2025.

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg emphasised that these initiatives also open new avenues for collaboration and trade across Southeast Asia.

He highlighted that Sarawak’s ambitions under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) have strengthened its autonomy in economic affairs and energy resources, particularly in petroleum, enabling the State to direct its development strategies.

Guided by the Post-Covid Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, he mentioned that Sarawak has made pivotal investments in catalytic projects, such as the 50MW Batang Ai Floating Solar Farm and hydrogen production initiatives, establishing the State as a leader in renewable energy and digital innovation.

“Other strategic investments in renewable energy include the Bintulu Hydrogen Production Plant, which will be a critical driver of clean energy exports in the region,” he said when addressing the inaugural 2025 Sarawak Budget Conference, themed “Together Building A Prosperous Future” at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) today.

The Premier underscored that energy remains the cornerstone of Sarawak’s economic strategy.

“Guided by our Energy Roadmap, we are advancing transformative projects like the Murum Floating Solar Project, set to become the largest hybrid floating solar-hydro installation globally upon completion,” he said.

Sarawak is also ramping up hydrogen production, aiming to produce 240,000 tonnes annually by 2028, which is expected to contribute RM2.5 billion to RM3.6 billion annually to the State’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

These initiatives not only bolster energy security but also support economic growth and Sarawak’s Net Zero 2050 aspirations.

As Malaysia prepares for its Asean chairmanship, Abang Johari said Sarawak has a unique opportunity to showcase its strengths on the regional stage.

“Another important development that presents significant opportunities for Sarawak is the establishment of Ibukota Nusantara, Indonesia’s new capital in Kalimantan. Its proximity to Sarawak opens up immense potential for cross-border economic collaboration, particularly in trade, logistics, and tourism.

“By strengthening connectivity and collaboration with our neighbours, we can further integrate Sarawak into the regional economy and enhance our position as a strategic gateway for Asean,” he pointed out.

Looking to the future, Abang Johari revealed Sarawak’s ambitions in the space economy, leveraging its geographic location near the equator to position itself as a hub for satellite launches.

“Feasibility studies are underway, and by utilising renewable hydrogen as clean space fuel, we aim to attract global partnerships while creating opportunities in satellite technology, navigation systems, and advanced logistics,” he added.

With these bold initiatives, Sarawak aims to solidify its leadership in sustainable development, while fostering regional cooperation and innovation as a cornerstone of Malaysia’s Asean vision. — DayakDaily
