KUCHING, Dec 24: The proposed new international airport in Kuching will add another X-factor to the ecosystem, making Sarawak attractive to businesses, investments, and visitors, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said the Sarawak government will build the new seamless airport with its own State funds as it needs to expedite its implementation.

“The construction of the new airport will make the role of our new airline, upon the takeover of MASwings, more apparent as our regional carrier to connect Sarawak with regional and other destinations,” he said in his Christmas video message today.

While acknowledging that an airline is not an easy venture to manage, Abang Johari said the Sarawak government has no choice but to invest in the new airline to suit its purpose with its own business model.

“Hoping for existing airlines to accommodate our needs is not an option if Sarawak wants to be a well-sought destination for tourists and businesspeople alike,” he added.

He also reassured that Sarawak’s ambitious plan is not only centred in Kuching.

“Bintulu, as the gas hub; Miri, as the northern gateway; Sibu, which is slated for redevelopment; Simanggang, as the rice bowl; and Sarikei and Betong, as agropolitan areas, will get their fair share of development that is anchored on their respective strengths,” he emphasised.

He further mentioned that these were some of the strategic assets that Sarawak would be developing and acquiring in the next five to 10 years to put the State on par with other developed countries. – DayakDaily
