KUCHING, July 10: Sarawak will establish its own Hydrogen Certification Platform in alignment with international standards, a move aimed at ensuring transparency, accountability and market integrity as the State powers ahead in positioning itself as a regional hydrogen leader.

According to a TVS news report, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced this during his keynote address titled ‘Sarawak’s Hydrogen Vision: Catalysing Green Growth for ASEAN and Beyond’ at the World Hydrogen Asia Conference 2025 in Tokyo today.

He emphasised that this certification platform will serve as a vital mechanism to strengthen investor confidence and support large-scale hydrogen investments in Sarawak.

“At the same time, Sarawak is actively pursuing long-term offtake agreements on the global stage to give assurance to investors looking for scalable and reliable hydrogen production,” he added.

Abang Johari pointed out that Sarawak’s hydrogen journey has already gained traction, with flagship projects such as H2biscus and H2ornbill now at the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) stage.

On the urban mobility front, he said the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system powered by hydrogen fuel cells is being introduced as part of efforts to modernise Kuching’s public transport while cutting carbon emissions.

“The dedicated Rembus Hydrogen Plant will produce 5,000 kilograms of green hydrogen daily to fuel 38 ART trains and 55 hydrogen feeder buses under the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS),” he revealed.

He added that multi-fuel stations are already operational, and with the recent amendment to the Sarawak Gas Distribution Ordinance, hydrogen is now fully integrated into the State’s energy regulatory framework.

Abang Johari also reaffirmed that the Sarawak Hydrogen Economy Roadmap (SHER) is the cornerstone of the State’s green transition, setting out a long-term vision to make Sarawak a cost-competitive, scalable and reliable hydrogen producer.

“Our strategy is driven by strong governance, enabling infrastructure, financing, skilled workforce development and clear regulatory support, all of which provide a realistic yet transformative platform,” he said.
