KUCHING, Feb 5: The Sarawak government will become a blockholder in Affin Bank Sdn Bhd, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said the negotiations on the stakes in the commercial bank will be finalised within a month or two.

“Let us pray that within a month or two, we will take over a bank where the majority block will be owned by Sarawakians.

“Then, we would have our own bank for us to boost the small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), including the fashion industry players who need to do online business.

“If you can produce quality products like Datuk Jimmy Choo (fashion designer), you need to sell them using our own app that serves as an online supermarket gallery,” he said when speaking at Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak’s (Centexs) 8th Convocation Ceremony held at Centexs Santubong today.

Speaking to reporters after the event, he elaborated that the discussion on the shares has been conclusive.

“It is just a matter of a formality from Bank Negara Malaysia. We are going to be the block shareholder,” he said.

When asked about the shares, Abang Johari explained that it involves a maximum block amount allowed by the Bank Negara. — DayakDaily
