Premier: Sarawak govt engaging with China’s Fudan University on setting up local campus

KUCHING, Feb 26: The Sarawak government has its eye on getting Fudan University in Shanghai to set up a campus in the State.

According to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, presently, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian is engaging with Fudan University, which is among the top 5 universities in China, over the matter.

“I hope both China and Malaysia governments, since the China Consul-General in Kuching His Excellency Xing Weiping is here, will discuss if there is a proposal or agreement to have a university sited in Sarawak, especially Fudan University,” Abang Johari said during the Chinese New Year dinner organised by Federation of Chinese Associations of Kuching, Samarahan, Serian Divisons at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) last night.

Earlier, Federation of Chinese Associations of Sarawak president Dato Richard Wee urged the Sarawak government to pursue and persuade China’s top universities to set up branch campuses in Sarawak.

During the dinner, Abang Johari disclosed the Sarawak government has decided to allocate a RM15 million grant to Chung Hua Middle School No. 4 and another RM5 million to Sarawak Chinese Charitable Trust Board to facilitate the construction of a new school building in Stutong.

On Aug 5, 2023, the Sarawak Private Chinese Secondary School Charitable Trust returned the Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Abdullah building, which houses Chung Hua Middle School No. 4 at Jalan Haji Taha, to the Sarawak government.

In exchange, the Trust receive a substantial plot of land to facilitate the construction of a new school on a five-acre site in Stutong, while the charitable trust has also been given a three-acre piece of land in the same area. — DayakDaily
