KUCHING, Oct 3: Sekolah Rendah Agama Majlis Islam Sarawak (SRA MIS) No. 2 at FAC Access Road here has been renamed “Sekolah Rendah Agama Datuk Haji Mohamad Mortadza Haji Daud” in honour of the late Islamic leader’s immense contributions to the Muslim community and Sarawak.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, in officiating the school today, said the renaming was to acknowledge the legacy of Mortadza Daud, who had dedicated his life to advancing Islamic understanding, education, and development in Sarawak as well as contributing directly and indirectly to the growth of Islam in Malaysia.
“I thought it would be more fitting that this school carries the name of someone who has made great sacrifices and given so much to our religion, our community and the State,” he said.
Sarawak Islamic Council (MIS) president Datuk Misnu Taha, in his welcoming remarks, highlighted that there are currently 12 MIS Islamic schools across Sarawak—10 primary and two secondary—serving more than 6,630 students with the dedication of 587 teachers.
He said SRA MIS Kuching No. 2, which began operations in February this year, is among the newest additions, providing formal Islamic education with strong emphasis on Arabic, English and even Mandarin at selected schools, alongside character-building and STEM-based learning.
Misnu also recorded appreciation to the Sarawak government for allocating RM6.54 million this year to equip all MIS schools with 418 smart boards, underscoring the State’s commitment to ensuring Islamic schools are not left behind in digital transformation.
He further revealed that MIS has applied to establish a new Islamic primary school in Saratok and is also looking at Sadong Jaya, where there is growing demand as applications to Sekolah Ibnu Khaldun in Samarahan have exceeded capacity.
Also present at the ceremony were Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Project Coordinator for Regional Development Agencies, Kuching North City Commission and Islamic Affairs) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi and the newly-renamed Sekolah Rendah Agama Datuk Haji Mohamad Mortadza Haji Daud headmaster Amir Ahmad Dewan. — DayakDaily
