KUCHING, July 20: Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has put forward a proposal to revolutionise Rural Air Services in the region by considering the use of larger helicopters instead of the current ATR and Twin Otter aircrafts.
With the advancement of technology in the aviation sector, Abang Johari believes it is an opportune moment for both the Federal and Sarawak governments to explore various options, including adopting new aircraft, advanced technology, and equipment, in order to establish a more cost-effective rural air service that would benefit the people.
“We have been using ATR and Twin Otter (aircrafts) for these purposes. I have spoken to Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) on the possibility of using larger helicopters to connect remote or highland areas like Bario and Ba’kelalan, without the need for a physical airport.
“The Prime Minister has expressed agreement in principle with this proposal, acknowledging that we should study these options to enhance the Rural Air Services,” he said when addressing the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signing ceremony for the takeover of Rural Air Services by Sarawak government at a hotel here today.
He also expressed his appreciation for the Federal government’s subsidy for Rural Air Services, which is expected to continue until 2024.
However, in the event that the Federal government is unable to continue the subsidy beyond that period, Abang Johari said the Sarawak government is prepared to explore alternative financing to subsidise the service.
“But of course, we welcome the Federal government’s support to extend the subsidy until 2030 if possible,” he adedd.
In a press conference later, Federal Transport Minister Anthony Loke emphasised the significance of such services for areas lacking alternative modes of transportation besides air connectivity.
“There could be other options like using helicopters in the future. This is something up to the new operator (the Sarawak government through MASwings) to decide,” he said.
