KUCHING, Oct 19: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has asserted that the State’s economy is expected to undergo a significant transformation over the next two decades, shifting from government-led growth to being primarily driven by the private sector.
Abang Johari expressed that by that time, the government administration would take on a supportive role rather than being the main driver of economic growth.
“I may be wrong, but the future of Sarawak is not confined to government administration. The main engine of growth will be the private sector,” he stated during the ‘Sarawak Agenda: Town Hall Session with the Premier of Sarawak’, which took place today at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (Mitec) in Kuala Lumpur, in conjunction with Lan Berambeh Anak Sarawak 2024.
Abang Johari cited Singapore as an example, where the economy is not solely managed by the government but benefits significantly from private sector expertise.
He highlighted that Singapore’s open policies allow civil servants to transition into the private sector, which requires experienced individuals.
“I believe that in 20 years, Sarawak’s economy will similarly be propelled by the private sector, and we must prepare for this change,” he added.
The town hall, attended by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof and other State ministers, allows Sarawakian students in Peninsular Malaysia an opportunity to come together and celebrate Sarawak’s culture and traditions, as well as to share their ideas and aspirations with the Premier during the session.
The Premier further elaborated on the need for expertise in key areas such as technology and law to meet the demands of the private sector in managing the State’s economy effectively. — DayakDaily
