BINTULU, Sept 18: There is a possibility that natural gas resources in Sarawak waters may extend up to Telok Melano in Lundu, says Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said Sarawak’s claim on the sharing of six new oil fields discovered off its waters by Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) only meant to contribute in the production of gas resources for the country.
“That is why if we have such intention to make good deeds, I feel that we will find more resources in Sarawak waters.
“I firmly believe that geologically, the hydrocarbon (natural resources) may extend up to Telok Melano, Lundu where the Yang di-Pertuan Agong was. If that is the case, we have that reserve of gas,” he said during Bintulu Additional Gas Facility (BAGSF-2) First Gas Ceremony held at the site today.
Abang Johari further said that back then, there was no technology to separate carbon dioxide from the sour gas.
“But now we have the technology. Meaning, we inject carbon back into the wells through carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS). We develop a new industry and this would benefit the State and the country as a whole,” he added. — DayakDaily
