KUCHING, Aug 1: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has done a lot for Kuching City ever since its establishment, says Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said this could be seen in the Jalan Song area to Vivacity Megamall and from Stutong to the airport, and with it, the housing schemes and satellite towns within its jurisdiction while preserving buildings and beautifying Padungan together with (Kuching) Waterfront.
The Premier added that next on the task list is to tackle flood-prone areas.
“Steps will be taken to develop flood-prone areas, and the Sarawak government will inject funds to solve flood issues. We hope that by 2030, we will have the infrastructure to manage floods.
“This needs a huge sum of funds, and we will work with the Federal government to upgrade the drainage system,” he said at the 35th Kuching City Day celebration at Kuching Waterfront.
Meanwhile, in a statement issued today in conjunction with Kuching City Day, MBKS mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the council had embraced transformative initiatives such as the UNICEF Child-Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI) and the Age-Friendly Cities and Communities Initiative (AFCC).
“The recognition of Kuching City as a City of Gastronomy by UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network (UCCN) is a testament to our city’s boundless creativity and dedication to promoting sustainable urban development through art, craft, and culinary mastery,” said Wee.
Wee added that over the years, MBKS has embarked on comprehensive city planning, adept financial management, and embracing operational flexibility to be an age-friendly city.
“We focused on enhancing pedestrian pathways and curating delightful activities tailored to the delight of our seniors,” said Wee.
The mayor said that the council will continue to commit to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles and advocate for responsible and ethical practices while fostering a community where equal opportunities and benefits flourish while upholding transparency, accountability, and unwavering integrity. — DayakDaily
