MIRI, Jan 18: Improved connectivity and infrastructure are among the development initiatives under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) to enhance economic potential in northern Sarawak, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Speaking at a press conference following the PBB Northern Zone delegates meeting on Saturday, Abang Johari detailed a comprehensive plan to build a road network connecting key areas in the region.

“Under the Highland Development Agency (HDA) and the Regional Corridor Development Authority (RECODA), we will construct a road from Marudi town to Long Terawan, and from there to Long Iman and the Ulu area, ultimately linking to Mount Buda in Limbang,” he said.

The PBB president highlighted the economic and cultural benefits of the proposed infrastructure, emphasising tourism, agriculture, and rice production in the Limbang and Lawas valleys.

“This region is rich in culture and has immense potential for tourism and agriculture, particularly rice cultivation,” he added.

Abang Johari also announced plans to boost tourism by upgrading infrastructure in key areas such as Niah and Bungai Beach.

“The Niah area, with its UNESCO-recognised site, has great potential. We will enhance the road network and develop facilities to attract more visitors,” he stated.

Abang Johari further revealed plans for Miri’s coastal development, including an eight-kilometre offshore jetty to support cargo and cruise ship operations.

“If facilities are in place, cruise ships from destinations like Singapore and Bali (Indonesia) could make stops here. This would bring thousands of tourists to the region, boosting local businesses and the food and beverage sector,” he explained.

To support these initiatives, the Sarawak government is taking strategic steps, including the acquisition of MASwings to establish it as a regional airline.

“The regional airline will improve connectivity and enhance tourism services, making it easier for travellers to visit Sarawak,” Abang Johari said.

Looking ahead to 2030, the Sarawak government aims to transform the region through sustainable development.

“With proper infrastructure and strategic planning, we are confident in unlocking the full potential of northern Sarawak,” he said.

During the meeting, PBB Northern Zone branches presented resolutions to the Premier which included infrastructure and connectivity, agricultural and fisheries development, and tourism expansion. — DayakDaily
