KUCHING, Aug 6: The Malay heritage architectural design on the new Hikmah Exchange Event Centre symbolises the Malay settlements in the Satok area.
According to Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, the Satok area is synonymous with the nickname ‘Kampung Melayu’ within the city, despite it bustling with various commercial activities and businesses.
“The building is also an important symbol in defending the property owned by the Malay community in the city as because of ownership issues, many of their properties were disposed of due to the rapid development that happened several years ago in the area,” he said during the official launching of the new Hikmah Exchange Convention Centre last night (Aug 5).
He said it is the desire of the Sarawak government that such a building reflects the success in preserving historical infrastructure through digital technology.
“Most importantly, it will become part of the component to develop the competitiveness of ‘Old Kuching’ as a tourist destination to upgrade the socioeconomic status of the local community,” he said. — DayakDaily
