KUCHING, July 29: Sarawak has chosen to view the challenges that climate change brings as a catalyst for economic and social transformation and not as a barrier to development.

According to a report from the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS), Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that the climate crisis opens new avenues to create jobs, build more resilient communities, and preserve Sarawak’s natural heritage for future generations.

“I do not see climate action as a burden because I view it as an opportunity to create green jobs, develop resilient communities, and protect our natural heritage for the next generation,” he said.

This was said during his keynote speech read by Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Project Coordinator for Regional Development Agencies, DBKU, and Islamic Affairs), Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, during the ‘International Seminar on Humanity and Climate Change Crisis: A Multidimensional Perspective’ held here today.

Abang Johari further added that Sarawak’s views on climate change promote an integrated and green development approach, as outlined in the Sarawak Sustainability Master Plan 2030.

Key initiatives highlighted include investment in the hydrogen economy to support industrial decarbonisation, the expansion of hydropower as a renewable energy source, and the development of carbon projects that recognise and leverage forest conservation.

The Premier also stressed that Sarawak is not waiting to be led in sustainability efforts but is taking the lead in shaping the region’s green energy future.

“With this strategy, Sarawak is not only blazing a new trail in Malaysia — we are positioning ourselves as the battery of ASEAN. We are not waiting to be led; we have chosen to lead,” he said. — DayakDaily
