KUCHING, Aug 19: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has called for more aggressive efforts to lower the cost of hydrogen production.

Abang Johari said that the power consumption to produce hydrogen through the electrolyser process has decreased to 30 kilowatt-hours (kWh) compared to 60 kWh previously.

He added that he requested that the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) work together with Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) to find an alternative to reduce electrolyser costs.

“The latest they said was at 28 kWh. We were also discussing with Samsung just now that we have to really be aggressive in terms of research and development (R&D) to reduce the cost of producing hydrogen,” he said.

Abang Johari said this when attending the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing and exchanging ceremony between PETRONAS and Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) to explore and develop Nature-based Solution (NbS) projects in Sarawak held at Hilton Hotel here today.

He said Sarawak is also fortunate to have a lot of water resources to produce hydrogen.

“That is why the Sarawak government has opted to produce alternative energy. We believed that in 10 to 15 years, the cost of producing hydrogen will be getting less and less and less,” he added. — DayakDaily
