KUCHING, Aug 24: Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg envisions a future where Sarawak Bumiputeras can confidently do business in China, including selling palm oil, thanks to their mastery of Mandarin through Chinese schools.
Speaking at a dinner in conjunction with Kai Dee Middle School’s 25th Relocation Anniversary in Bintulu last night (Aug 23), Abang Johari highlighted Sarawak’s unique multicultural landscape where Bumiputeras are increasingly becoming multilingual.
“Mind you, in Chinese schools in rural areas, the majority are Bumiputera students. In other words, the Bumiputera are studying in Chinese schools and mastering Mandarin.
“In the next 10 years, you will see many Bumiputeras—Malays, Ibans and Bidayuhs—speaking Mandarin just like the Chinese. Statistics have shown this,” he said during the event, which was broadcast live by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS) on Facebook.
Abang Johari further said this linguistic advantage would give Sarawakians a competitive edge in global markets.
“Perhaps when we want to sell palm oil to China, an Iban can do so because they can speak Mandarin,” he remarked, adding that this was among the reasons why the Sarawak government has recognised Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) graduates.
To date, the Sarawak government has disbursed nearly RM92 million in assistance to Chinese independent schools.
In addition, RM22 million has been allocated to Chinese-aided primary and secondary schools as of 2024.
At the event, Abang Johari also announced an allocation of RM25 million for Kai Dee Middle School. — DayakDaily
