KUCHING, June 26: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has announced that the newly upgraded Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus is strategically positioned to benefit from the upcoming enhancements in public transportation, including the planned Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) station at the university.
Abang Johari, who also serves as the Pro-Chancellor of Swinburne Sarawak, highlighted that these developments aim to provide affordable and convenient mobility options for students, fostering greater connectivity with other higher education institutions in Kuching.
“The ART will have a station at your university. This is because, as a student, you want to save money too. Your pocket money may not always be enough. So you have this public transport system that is cheaper and allows you to travel anywhere without hassle.
“And the ART will also connect you with other partners in education, for instance Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Sarawak, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas), and other higher institutes,” he said during his keynote address at the grand opening ceremony of the upgraded campus today.
The Premier emphasised that the new public transportation system will encourage students to engage with peers from different universities, creating a supportive environment for academic and personal growth.
“With that you have a healthy environment and that will motivate you to explore further and God willing, up to the highest level of education that you want to achieve,” he added.
Swinburne Sarawak has marked a pivotal milestone with the official unveiling of its upgraded campus, positioning the next generation university at the forefront of higher education.
The RM50 million campus upgrade project is aligned with Swinburne’s long-term commitment to enhancing the campus experience, creating meaningful student experiences, and providing students with a world-class teaching and learning environment.
The comprehensive campus upgrade project include enhancements such as a new student hub, a food hall, a student village, and the Borneo Atrium, which features an expanded library.
The ceremony was attended by notable dignitaries and officials, including Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, Swinburne Sarawak board of directors chairman Datuk Amar Jaul Samion, Swinburne University of Technology vice-chancellor and president Professor Pascale Quester, and Swinburne Sarawak pro vice-chancellor and chief executive officer (CEO) Ir Professor Lau Hieng Ho. — DayakDaily
