“This contribution is to honour the sacrifices of teachers and to support STU’s welfare programmes for its members. Whatever you choose to do with the fund, it must benefit the members,” he said when delivering his speech at the gala dinner in conjunction with STU’s Diamond Jubilee, held last night (Sept 14) at a hotel here.

The event was broadcast live via the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) YouTube channel.

Abang Johari also commended STU for its initiatives, including the introduction of insurance policies for members, which he said reflect the union’s strong commitment to safeguarding teachers’ welfare.

He added that the Sarawak government would continue supporting teachers, including through allowances, bonuses, and training opportunities, while ensuring that education policies remain pragmatic and inclusive to meet changing times.

Also present were Engkilili assemblyman Johnichal Rayong Ngipa, STU president Kullin Djayang, Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) president Dato Dr Adnan Mat, National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) president Aminuddin Awang, Sarawak Education Department director Omar Mahli, the central leadership of STU, distinguished guests, and union members. — DayakDaily
