Speaking during the ceremony, RISM Sarawak Branch chairman Sharlene Toh said they proposed to establish the ‘Kuching KM0 Monument’ to restore a piece of lost history.

“It symbolises the integral role of surveyors in surveying and measuring our landscape,” she said.

Meanwhile, according to RISM Sarawak Branch in a press statement, the design of the KM0 Monument resembles two cats holding up the KM0 sign, which signifies Kuching’s reputation as a Cat City.

According to the branch, they have been working closely with the relevant authorities in identifying and establishing the Kuching KM0 Monument which is proposed to be located at either Jalan Gambier at the Kuching Waterfront or near the old Kuching post office building.

Traditionally, the KM0 Monument denotes a particular location or origin, usually in the capital city, from which distances are measured.

One famous marker is the Milliarium Aureum (Golden Milestone) of the Roman Empire, believed to be the literal origin of the maxim “all roads lead to Rome”. – DayakDaily
