KUCHING, Feb 12: The Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) is entering a transition phase, with the upcoming 16th Convention serving as a crucial platform for future leaders who will shape Sarawak’s future and continue the party’s mission, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg says.
According to a news report by TVS, Abang Johari explained that the transition of leadership is a reality that must be accepted, especially as the current generation of leaders approaches the end of their term of service.
“This convention is a transitional convention. If we look at our current leadership position in PBB, the majority of them are in their seventies. And the reality is, we cannot serve any longer,” he said, as reported by TVS.
He said this in a special interview with Sarawak Tribune and Suara Sarawak at Wisma Bapa Malaysia, here today.
The PBB party president said that this convention will provide an opportunity for grassroots leadership to identify a new line-up of leaders who will continue PBB’s 60-year effort in developing Sarawak.
Abang Johari also highlighted the journey of PBB’s leadership since the era of Tun Jugah Barieng, Tun Abdul Rahman Yaakub, and Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, each of whom brought different approaches according to the needs of the times.
“Under Tun Jugah and Tun Rahman, the main focus was on developing Sarawak within the framework of Malaysia, which had just gained independence from colonialism.
“Then in the era of Tun Taib, we saw more organised development, with many Sarawakians leading the administration and government sectors,” he shared.
He emphasised that now Sarawak is in an era that requires leaders who not only understand the State’s history and rights but are also capable of adapting to global changes, especially in the fields of digital economy, green energy, and sustainable development.
The new ecosystem changes must also be taken into account when facing more complex and competitive future challenges with other countries.
In this context, the report stated that Abang Johari said, the next generation of leaders plays an important role in shaping a new, progressive, and competitive leadership line-up. – DayakDaily
