KUCHING, June 24: Sarawakian para powerlifting star Bonnie Bunyau Gustin reaffirmed his dominance on the world stage by clinching the men’s 72kg gold medal at the 2025 Para Powerlifting World Cup in Beijing, China, on Sunday (June 22).
Competing at the China Administration of Sports for Persons with Disabilities (CASPD), the reigning Paralympic champion secured the top podium spot with a best lift of 215kg, according to a TVS news report.
Although the lift was well below his own world record of 232kg set at the 2024 Paris Paralympics, it was more than enough to secure victory.
Cuba’s Jesus Cuevas Cisneros took silver with a 175kg lift, while India’s Ramubhai B. Bhambava settled for bronze with 151kg.
Meanwhile, Bonnie’s elder brother, Bryan Gustin, added to Malaysia’s medal tally with a bronze in the men’s 88kg category.
Bryan lifted 180kg to place third behind UAE’s Mohammed Khamis Khalaf, who took silver with 205kg, and China’s Jixiong Ye, who dominated with a 220kg lift.
Malaysia’s success continued with Nicodemus Manggoi Moses earning a bronze in the men’s 97kg event.
He lifted 210kg to finish behind China’s Panpan Yan, who claimed gold with 225kg, and Uzbekistan’s Khusniddin Usmanov, who secured silver with a 223kg effort. — DayakDaily
