KUCHING, Sept 28: Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira Sambang is confident that the poverty rate in Sarawak would reduce gradually by the end of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP).

He said the 12MP budget tabled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob in Dewan Rakyat yesterday focuses on commitment to Sabah and Sarawak socioeconomic development in relation to demands stated in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

“The prime minister mentioned that about 50 per cent of the total budget in the 12MP would be allocated for less developed States and regions in Malaysia and in this sense, this includes Sarawak & Sabah.

“This iniatitive will be able to narrow the development gap among the States and regions in Malaysia,” he said in a statement today.

He further said Sarawak needs basic development such as road, electricity, treated water, education, healthcare, digitalisation, security and so on.

“I have great hope that Sarawak can transform better given the proposed development in the 12MP is well planned, especially in rural areas.

“I am also confident that the poverty rate in Sarawak would reduce gradually by the end of the 12MP,” he further stated. — DayakDaily
