Postpone Sarawak elections to protect Sarawakians, urges PBK

Voon Lee Shan

KUCHING, July 26: Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) wants the 12th Sarawak Elections to be postponed, as it must be called within two months after August 1 if the King were to lift the Emergency Order on that day.

PBK president Voon Lee Shan said this is to protect lives against new Covid-19 variants which are emerging.

“In order for us to beat this Covid-19, PBK urges the 12th Sarawak Elections to be deferred or postponed.

“This is because we can’t take risks because lives of the people are more important than elections. As it is now, we don’t see the situation will improve soon because new variants keep on appearing and they are more dangerous now,” said Voon in a statement today.

He alleged that the effectiveness of the vaccine is unknown and that the party “have heard many people suffered side effects and even death after vaccination”.

With case count reaching over 10,000 (nationwide figure) per day now, he said Covid-19 is not something the party can take lightly.

“It is a sad thing that hospital staff is overworked and we do not have enough staff, medicine, hospital beds and equipment to effectively fight Covid-19.

“This situation is expected to get worse in coming months with resignations of medical staff who are tired of their job and who are not given permanent jobs by the Health Ministry or authorities.

“With these problems faced by the government, postponement of elections is wise.

“We must all have in our minds that, all people are Covid-19 positive unless proved otherwise. If we don’t have this awareness, we would be complacent and will keep ourselves from social distancing and staying at home,” said Voon. — DayakDaily
