KUCHING, Oct 30: Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg acknowledges that it is possible for a woman to become the Premier of Sarawak as long as she is competent and capable of performing her duties well.

Abang Johari told this to reporters today during a press conference following the launch of the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) Women’s Wing election machinery at the Penview Convention Centre in Demak here.

“Nowadays, there is no gender in (electing a leader to lead a state or country). If the female candidate is competent and can perform her duties well, why not?

“Also, as long as the citizens have confidence (in her to lead them),” he said when asked about grooming successors.

He pointed out that Rishi Sunak was recently appointed as the first ethnic Indian Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

“How did Sunak get to where he is now, and who can predict he will be the UK Prime Minister?

“And who knows, perhaps Kamala Devi Harris will be the next President of the United States,” he added. — DayakDaily
