KUCHING, Sept 23: There is the possibility of exploring new areas offshore of Sarawak for more gas reserves, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
“Sarawak (currently) has 60 per cent of Malaysia’s gas reserves, and distribution is governed by Sarawak law under Sarawak’s Distribution of Gas Ordinance.
“The Sarawak government also appoints the aggregator under Section 7 of Sarawak’s Distribution of Gas Ordinance (DGO) 2016,” he said during the launching ceremony of the Borneo Oil & Gas Supply Base streamed live via Sarawak Public Communication Unit’s (Ukas) Facebook page today.
He said that with the ongoing exploration, the supply base (Bintulu Port) is an appropriate approach for Sarawak to help in regulating activities involving gas reserves offshore and on the shore of Sarawak including the one in Adong Kechil, Miri.
“In other words, there will be a lot of activities in oil and gas-based industries,” he added.
On the same note, Abang Johari also conveyed his gratitude to the federal government through the Royal Customs Department for approving Bintulu Port as a supply base in the region.
“Thank you very much for this license. I think this is the moment that we have been waiting for so that we can perform our duties to supply materials to industries in Sarawak,” he said. — DayakDaily
