KUCHING, Aug 21: An 18-year-old male student was arrested by police after being suspected of involvement in drug trafficking following the seizure of 1.08kg of cannabis worth RM3,240 during a raid at MJC New Township here on Thursday (Aug 20).
The arrest was carried out by a team from the Padawan District Police Headquarters (IPD) District Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division (BSJND) at about 11.30am after acting on information regarding drug trafficking activities.
The suspect was arrested at the mailbox storage room while holding a backpack and placing a white plastic parcel into the bag.
“Further inspection of the parcel led to the discovery of a brown box containing aluminium foil packages.
“Inside were 10 transparent plastic packets labelled Tangie and Ice Cream Cake, as well as another black transparent plastic packet, all containing dried plants suspected to be cannabis,” said Padawan district police chief Superintendent Barry William in a statement today, as reported by TVS.
He said the seized items had a total gross weight of 1,080 grammes and an estimated value of RM3,240.
“The suspect, who is a student and resides in Kuching, also underwent an initial urine screening test, which returned positive for ketamine and THC.
“In the same operation, police also seized a black Lexus IS250, estimated to be worth RM35,000, for forfeiture proceedings under the laws relating to assets connected to the case,” he said.
Barry said the suspect was believed to have received instructions from an individual known only as ‘Franky’.
“Police are continuing investigations to identify the network and other individuals believed to be involved in the drug trafficking activities,” he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. — DayakDaily
