MIRI, March 31: The Sarawak Marine Police Region 5 Miri intercepted a smuggling operation involving liquor and cigarettes, after stopping a 4WD vehicle transporting the illegal goods valued at RM142,506.25 near Taman Tunku.

Miri Police Chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu revealed that the 4WD vehicle was stopped and searched during ‘Ops Taring Kontraban’ conducted around 11am on Saturday (March 30).

“The vehicle was pulled over on the roadside at Jalan Limbang Utara in Taman Tunku for an inspection. Upon searching, it was discovered to be loaded with contraband cigarettes and liquor, suspected to be untaxed,” he said in a statement.

The authorities swiftly apprehended the driver and seized the illegal items.

Subsequent investigations unveiled that the driver lacked valid documents for the seized items.

“The absence of proper documentation raises concerns regarding the source and legality of the goods in question. Consequently, the driver remains in custody while the authorities conduct a thorough investigation,” he added.

The case is being investigated under the Customs Act 1967. — DayakDaily
