Police seeking public cooperation, more info on fight at Ulu Sungai Merah

SIBU, Dec 4: Police are appealing to the public to come forward to provide information on a fight that took place in Ulu Sungai Merah last Sunday night.

Acting Sibu District police chief Supt Collin Babat said the case is still under investigation.

“The special investigation team is still investigating the case and we ask the public or witnesses who have seen the incident to come forward to provide information to the police or contact the investigatingĀ officer to assist in the investigation.

“We are taking this case seriously and hope the public will not to spread false information,” he said yesterday.

In a related development, he said, the special investigation team is also currently investigating allegations of defamation against a senior police officer.

Last Monday, a video was uploaded by a Facebook account with the username ‘Ali Hero’.

The video showed a fight involving 20 men who attacked a man outside a food court in Jalan Ulu Sungai Merah on the night of Nov 28.

The post also contained a defamatory statement against a police officer with the rank of deputy police superintendent in Sibu district.

It claimed that the senior police officer was on the take, and as such allowed the group to run an illegal online gambling ring.

So far, 15 individuals have been arrested in relation to the case.

Police are hunting for the remaining suspects, who are still at large.

The case is being investigated under Section 148 and 500 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1988.
