KUCHING, June 22: A 25-year-old Indonesian national, identified only as Buni, escaped from police custody while on remand for a rape investigation at the Sibu Central Police Station at approximately 4pm yesterday on Saturday (June 21).
According to a statement, Sibu District Police Chief, Zulkipli Suhaili, confirmed that the detainee was under investigation under Section 376(3) of the Penal Code, which pertains to rape offenses.
At the time of the escape, the suspect was still dressed in a purple lockup uniform and had his hands cuffed.
The case is now being investigated under Sections 223/224 of the Penal Code for escaping from lawful custody, which carries a penalty of up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.
“In response to the incident, a manhunt codenamed Op Kesan was immediately launched involving all security elements under the Sibu District Police Headquarters to track and recapture the detainee,” he said.
