Rape suspect who escaped police custody in Sibu recaptured

KUCHING, June 23: The 25-year-old Indonesian national, identified only as Buni, who escaped from police custody while on remand for a rape investigation at the Sibu Central Police Station on Saturday (June 21) has been recaptured.

According to a statement, Sibu District Police Chief Zulkipli Suhaili said they managed to track him down following a tip-off from the public.

“The suspect was detained at 12.26am at Jalan Terap in Sibu. He was still wearing a lock-up uniform and was cuffed,” he said.

He added that a remand application for the suspect was made today. The case is being investigated under Sections 223/224 of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of up to two years, a fine, or both.

At the same time, the police expressed their gratitude for the public’s cooperation.

The police also advised the public not to speculate regarding the incident.

The detainee was under investigation under Section 376(3) of the Penal Code, which pertains to rape offenses. — DayakDaily
