KUCHING, Aug 13: The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has revealed that drug trafficking activities using courier services have begun spreading to Sarawak, raising concerns over security loopholes in the delivery system.
According to a TVS news report, Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the trend was driven by procedural weaknesses in the service, which have yet to be tightly regulated.
“Police believe this method is being used to send drugs to Sarawak due to lax procedural aspects by service providers.
“Their focus is mainly on business, while the security of delivered items receives less attention,” he was quoted as saying at the Bukit Aman Police Headquarters in Kuala Lumpur yesterday (Aug 12).
Earlier, Hussein received a courtesy visit from Sarawak Minister of Women, Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah.
Also present were the ministry’s permanent secretary Datu Felicia Tan Ya Hua and Sarawak Social Development Council executive secretary Riziandy Nawawi.
Hussein disclosed that PDRM and the Home Ministry (KDN) are reviewing measures to tighten the procedures, including the possibility of amending relevant laws to prevent misuse of courier services.
At the same time, he urged the public to be cautious when sharing their addresses, especially with suspicious individuals, as the information could be exploited for criminal activities.
“This tactic could potentially make them drug mules in the process,” he warned.
Hussein further revealed that Sarawak has also been identified as a “preferred location” for drug syndicates to use as a transit hub before smuggling the illegal substances overseas. — DayakDaily
