KUCHING, Aug 26: The 16-year-old father of an abandoned infant girl discovered in a motorcycle basket in Kampung Siol Kandis earlier today has been arrested to assist further investigation.
In a statement, Kuching Police chief ACP Ashmon Bajah also confirmed the 16-year-old mother and her baby have been warded in a hospital for observation.
Villagers discovered the infant at about 5.30am today.
“Our officers responded to a call from a villager who found a newborn baby girl and she is still alive.
“Within four hours of investigation, we successfully arrested a young teen couple. During interrogation, they admitted that they abandoned the baby after her birth at about 2am,” Ashmon disclosed.
Among items confiscated by police were the couple’s clothes worn during the incident, mobile phones, a towel and a motorcycle.
Police are investigating the case under Section 317 of Penal Code, which carries a punishment of a maximum of seven years’ imprisonment or a fine, or both upon conviction. — DayakDaily
