KUCHING, March 30: The federal government is to expedite the construction of the Sarawak Cancer Centre in Samarahan and the Kuching Cancer Institute.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said it is the first such project to be implemented in Malaysia apart from Kuala Lumpur.

According to him, during a meeting earlier, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg voiced his concern regarding cancer in Sarawak and the high cost needed for the treatment, which is only available in Kuala Lumpur.

“He emphasised that the facilities need to be built in Sarawak. This matter is long overdue because of the technical issues and the country’s financial constraints. So, I agreed to use a new method to address this.

“If Sarawak can initially fund the project a bit, the federal government can cover the rest later,” said Anwar when attending the Berbuka Puasa Madani programme held at the Al-Mutaqqin Mosque in Kota Samarahan today.

He said that for the construction of schools and clinics in rural areas, the Sarawak government also agreed to assist the federal government to expedite construction for the projects.

“If the Sarawak government is able to implement the project at a lower cost and faster, I agree to it.

“We will bring this matter to the Cabinet for approval to enable the Sarawak government to implement it,” he added. — DayakDaily
