LAWAS, Nov 5: Prime Minister Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim has agreed to approve an allocation of RM400,000 to rebuild two buildings at SMK Lawas that were destroyed in a fire last month.
According to a TVS news report, Lawas MP Dato Henry Sum Agong disclosed this during a meeting with Education Minister Fadlina Sidek at her office in Parliament yesterday (Nov 4).
Henry also explained that several requirements for the education sector in his parliamentary constituency were also debated at the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.
“The future of our children needs to be emphasised in terms of basic needs, administrative equipment, and adequate teaching staff.
“In Lawas there are 35 primary schools and four secondary schools. Most of the school buildings are in poor condition, especially those built around 30 to 40 years ago with construction materials that are partly made of wood and are not durable compared to concrete buildings,” he told the media today.
In addition to the issue of dilapidated schools, Henry also suggested that SK Siang-Siang, which is often hit by floods, be moved to a higher area.
“In terms of teaching staff, I understand that there are 74 vacancies in Lawas and recently there have been two principal vacancies at SMK Trusan and SMK Sundar for quite some time.
“In that regard, I suggest that the role of the Sarawak Education Department be further expanded to expedite the process of recruiting new teachers and filling vacant positions,” he said. — DayakDaily
