KUCHING, June 13: The federal government has agreed to increase Elaun Sara Hidup (Household Living Allowance) or ESH for students sponsored by the Public Service Department (JPA) to further their studies in Malaysia and abroad.
Prime Minister Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim said those studying abroad would receive an increased ESH rate of 15 per cent, except for First Degree students in the United Kingdom (UK), as their ESH rate increased on Nov 7, 2022.
Those studying within the country will receive an RM100 increase in the ESH rate per month according to their level of study.
“This ESH rate increase involves an increase in financial implications with an estimated RM52.03 million for six months from July 2023 which will benefit 43,595 JPA-sponsored students.
“The increase in the ESH rate is one of the government’s efforts to deal with the high cost of living increase, especially for B40 students who live in the big cities of the country of study.
“This initiative to review the ESH rate will enable government-sponsored students to focus on achieving academic excellence without thinking about the financial burden of studies while also ensuring that the government’s sponsorship offer remains relevant and prestigious,” he said in a statement today. — DayakDaily
