KUCHING, Nov 11: Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang requests “people-centric” projects to tackle the traffic congestion between Kota Sentosa central business district (CBD) to Kuching International Airport (KIA).
He said the residents and the local community leaders from Kota Sentosa and its surrounding areas have in a number of occasions put forward their request directly to him on the problem of traffic congestion which happened even during off-peak hours along the alternative route from Kota Sentosa CBD to Kuching International airport.
“Rapid developments and increase in population in and around Kota Sentosa areas has brought about huge increase in traffic volume.
“The road system and traffic flow from Kota Sentosa CBD to KIA needs to be improved and upgraded in order to increase the capacity of the roads and intersections.
“One of the main factors that affects the flow of traffic is due to the fact that there is no provision of direct access from Kota Sentosa CBD to KIA,” said Lo while debating on Sarawak Budget 2020 in Sarawak Legislative Assembly today.
He said presently traffic has to pass through the two traffic signalised junctions at Kuching Sentral and Batu 6, hence creating unnecessary and unsafe turning manoeuvres and increasing travel distance before heading towards KIA direction.
This Lo, who is also Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman, said has in turn imposed heavy traffic loading along the section of road fronting Kuching Sentral and has created a heavily congested situation.
“In view of the above and on behalf of the residents, I would like to request the implementation of such a ‘people-centric’ project with immediate effect to tackle the growing traffic demands and alleviate traffic congestion and also to improve the level of service for this road,” said Lo.
On another road issue, Lo also requested that the State government will construct the proposed Jalan Datuk Amar Stephen Yong/Jalan Datuk Amar Wee Boon Ping T Junction to Jalan Batu Kitang/Datuk Amar Stephen Yong T Junction.
“I would like to humbly request for this stretch of road to be constructed soon as the road is heavily congested on a daily basis and this makes it an extremely accident prone area. The urgency is real because the safety of our road users on this stretch of road is at stake,” said Lo who is also Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Batu Kitang chairman. — DayakDaily
