KUCHING, May 11: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Hulu Rajang branch chairman Senator Abun Sui Anyit is backing Nurul Izzah Anwar in the race for deputy presidency in the party’s national election for the 2025-2028 term.

In a statement, Abun also announced his candidacy for the vice president post in the election, which is expected to take place from May 22 to 24 in Johor Baru.

Commenting on the race for the deputy president post, Abun Sui Anyit expressed his deep respect and affection for both Nurul Izzah and incumbent Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, who also serves as the Economy Minister, noting that each brings their respective strengths to the table.

“If possible, I want both Rafizi and Nurul Izzah to become deputy presidents, but the party’s constitution only allows for one person to fill that post. Whether I want to or not, I have to make a heavy decision to choose between the two.

“Both have a great impact on the party, which is much needed, and I hope that whatever happens, win or lose, both should still be given an important role to lead the party forward,” he said.

He further clarified that his support for Nurul Izzah does not undermine the capabilities of either candidate, emphasising that his decision was guided purely by personal conviction and made without influence or pressure from any party.

Meanwhile, on his decision to enter the race for the vice president post, he hoped that those from Sarawak, Borneo, would be given the opportunity to represent Borneo and the Dayak ethnic group in the central leadership.

“If elected, I will be a leader who listens and is determined to bring the voices of the grassroots to the party leadership level,” he said.

According to The Star, the upcoming PKR national election will see 251 candidates vying for various party leadership posts.

PKR central election committee chairperson Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa said nominations included 104 candidates for the central leadership council (MPP), 85 for the youth wing leadership council, and 62 for the women’s wing leadership council.

The two-day nomination process ended on Friday.

She said the final list of candidates will be confirmed on May 15, with official campaigning commencing immediately and ending at 11.59pm on May 22.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim retained the presidency unchallenged, while Nurul Izzah and Rafizi are expected to enter a one-on-one contest for the party’s number two position. — DayakDaily
